Scawfell toward Goldsmith Island

6/08/2010
Had enough of waiting around for the wind to abate and then having slow slogs to get anywhere. Pulled away from Scawfell in the early morning and with only headsails travelled at between 5 and 7 knots to arrive at Shaw Island early in the afternoon after passing Goldsmith around noon. Was about to take a photo of Platypus Rock which has an amazing resemblance to a humpback whale , when I looked forward and saw two adult whales on a collision course with me. They realised I was there and dived below my bows with only metres to spare. I needed to get the anchor down and have a nice quieting cup of tea after that. The wind did not let up all night with one boat dragging anchor, fortunately before dark. Went ashore for a meal of oysters. National Parks had been up to their usual vandalism and had cut down the two coconut trees which used to be on the Island. They really are the most gormless bunch of deadshits you could ever want to be in charge of things. Stupid decisions made by pen pushers who will NEVER venture out and look at these beautiful islands.
